Montana HS Association Proposals
Montana tinkering with hoops mercy rule.

December 26, 2007, 06:41 a.m. EST
(/)

The Montana High School Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 21 in Great Falls.

Officials from the state's 181 schools will gather that weekend to discuss athletics and other school activities.

Schools will meet in their respective enrollment classes to talk about some issues, but the major topics will be addressed at the general meeting Jan. 21.

Among sports proposals on the agenda is one calling for a "mercy rule" in basketball. Proposed by Turner High, it calls for

a running clock once a team gets ahead by 40 or more points.

Another proposal, co-sponsored by Hysham and Plevna, seeks to make 8th-graders eligible to play varsity basketball and volleyball.

In Idaho we have a mercy rule in hoops. If a team is ahead by 30 or more entering the 4th quarter, it's a running clock. Not found of the rule, but since I do play by play, it doesn't drag out the game which is nice!

Initially when I read the poll, I was thinking of a mercy rule as in football, where the game is called when the other team is up 40 points (or whatever it is). In that light I voted against it. Now, having read the article and seeing that the game wouldn't be called but that there would be a running clock, I went back and changed my vote because it wouldn't be a bad idea. When a team is ahead by 40, and it's the 4th quarter, why prolong it? Sometimes both teams are over the limit in fouls, and it takes forever shooting the free throws. I would assume the clock would run during the free throws. Anyway, it sounds like something to look into.
