Green River High School student-athlete Andrew Meredith has earned national recognition with his recent nomination to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
The Army All-American Bowl is the premier stage for high school football players to gain some exposure with division I schools. Hosted in San Antonio this year, 90 players will be chosen from 400
nominees to play in the annual East vs. West high school All-American game.
Among the 400 nominee's is Wyoming's lone representative and possibly the first-ever Wyoming native to be selected to the game, Green River Wolf Andrew Meredith.
"I was really excited to be nominated. I mean, only the top 400 kids in the nation make it," Meredith said.
Getting to this point wasn't easy for Meredith. After numerous combines, camps and constant personal training, Meredith has caught the eye of many influential coaches and recruiters. Recruiters from national camps had many good things to say about Meredith's potential and performances, commenting on everything from his physical abilities to his understanding of the game.
"Meredith didn't disappoint...Watch out for this kid once he gets to the next level." reports Jamie Newberg, recruiting analyst.
"This may possibly be the only DI prospect in the entire state of Wyoming...He not only took home the overall camp MVP, but I personally saw him pick off three passes during the 7-in-7...He is definitely a DI prospect with very good academics." says Barry Every, recruiting analyst.
Meredith gained much of his exposure through numerous camps and combines, including the most recent, The Football University technique camp in Denver last April. Meredith mentioned after his camp in April that he felt the camps and hard work were pay-off as he noticed the improvements in his game and began receiving nods of approval from camp coaches and recruiters. At that time, he also set his eyes on the All-American Bowl. With the nomination, Meredith will be one step closer to becoming an All-American and buying his ticket to San Antonio.
"This is legit. It's an honor based on skill and he's an outstanding young man athletically and academically. There is no question he will represent us well," GRHS Athletic Director Tom Wilson said.
Now, with nomination in-hand, all Meredith can do is wait. The selections for the game could possibly carry into December of this year, well after the season ends and into the winter sports season.
The selections are made by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee. The committee is comprised of a board from Sportslink, the producer of the Army All-American Bowl; Tom Lemming (CSTV host and USA Today sports recruiting specialist); and Rivals.com (a group comprised of more than 300 writers, reporters and publishers).
The All-Americans are officially selected during the U.S. Army All-American Selection Tour, which takes place over the course of the football season.
Meredith said he isn't really thinking about that, however. He just wants to focus on his upcoming senior football season.
However, Athletic Director Tom Wilson is already making plans. "If he makes it...Well, I can tell you that me and my wife are going to be in San Antonio that weekend," Wilson said.
More Notes:
Meredith has led Green River in defensive points all three years he has played for the Wolves and was named to the Class 5A All State football team this past season. Meredith says he is currently being recruited by several Division One football programs. Meredith recently returned from the National Underclassmen Combine in Ceder Hills, Texas--this camp is an invite only camp mainly for juniors. Meredith was named the Junior Class Overall MVP of the camp."
