girls track and field

June 17, 2008, 08:33 a.m. EST

CHICAGO (June 17, 2008) — In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today announced Emily Moore of Campbell County High School as its 2007-08 Gatorade Wyoming Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Moore is the second Gatorade Wyoming Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Campbell County High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Moore as Wyoming’s best high school girls track and field athlete. Moore is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced later this month.

The junior sprinter and jumper won three events at the Class 4A state meet, leading the Camels to a seventh-place finish as a team. Moore set a state record in winning the long jump for the third straight year with a leap of 19 feet, 2.25 inches. She also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.25 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 25.51 seconds. Moore placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 7.25 inches.

Moore has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and ranks first in her class. In addition to donating her time as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education role model, she volunteers as part of multiple community-service initiatives on behalf of the New Life Wesleyan Church. Moore also serves as a youth basketball and track coach and volunteers at local soup kitchens.

“She’s just so good,” said Gil Bradfield, head coach at rival Laramie High. “She had some great marks for a junior. Heck, she had some great marks as a freshman and sophomore. I was really impressed with her at state. She’s going to be good for a long time.”

Moore will begin her senior year of high school this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. The selection process is administered by RISE Magazine, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Moore joins recent Gatorade Wyoming Girls Track Field Athletes of the Year Amber Henry (2006-07, Mountain View HS) and two-time winner Stacy Slight (2005-06 and 2004-05, Cody HS) among the state’s list of former award winners.
