The brooms are out in Laramie and Casper Kelly Walsh for their soccer teams. Both teams had a boys/girls sweep at the 4A regionals this weekend.
Laramie's girls were heavily favored to win regionals heading into the weekend and they did not disapoint. Laramie would knock off the cindarella story of the tournament in the Gillette Lady Camels 3-2 in a semi-final contest and then doubled up Cheyenne Central 4-2 in the championship for the crown. Laramie will be the #1 seed into the state tournament and play the #4 seed from the west in the Rock Springs Lady Tigers to kick off the tourney at 11:30AM Thursday.
The Plainsmen won a pair of nailbiters to win a championship. First they would be the #5 seed Gillette Camels 2-1 thanks to a late goal. They would get another late goal to beat #2 Cheyenne East in the championship game for a 1-0 win. Laramie will go to state next week and face Green River in the opening round at 4:30PM Thursday.
The Kelly Walsh boys were also a #1 seed into regionals. They would beat #4 seeded Green River 2-0 in the semi-final round on Thursday and then edge #3 Rock Springs 2-1 in the championship game Saturday afternoon. KW will take on #4 seed Gillette in the opening round of the 2008 state tournament at Laramie on Thursday at 2:00PM.
Finally Kelly Walsh's Lady Trojans took home the championship in Rock Springs Saturday with a 4-3 shootout win over rivals and second seeded Natrona. The Lady Trojnas defeated #5 Star Valley 2-0 on Friday afternoon to advance to that championship game. KW will be the #1 seed at state and take on #4 seeded Cheyenne East at 9:00AM Thursday morning in the first time slot of the state tournament.
