State Track Update
Track and Field

May 15, 2008, 08:03 p.m. EST
(/)

Thursday got going with the 3200 meter runs and right away a state record fell. Saratoga Freshman Shelby Hohnholt won the 1A girls race in record breaking fashion going 11:51.11. That beat the old standard set last year by Snake River's Brooke Lee at 12:02.32.

The other record broken in the morning session came just a bit later as Burlington Sophomore Paige Neves tied the 1A Girls Pole Vault State Record. She had to beat the current record holder in the competition to tie the mark as Alisha Wardell went 9-06.00 last year in winning the event. Wardell went out at 9 even this year while Neves cleared a season best 9-06 to win it. The Lady Huskies scored major points in the pole vault as Michelle Fabricus finished third.

Other Notes:

Amber Henry won her 9th State Track Title. The Mountain View Junior won four events in each of her first two years and is now one-for-one at State 08. It wasn't easy as Amber Getzfreid of Riverside pushed her all the way and finished only a half second behind. Henry won her first 8 track titles in 3A. Mountain View dropped to 2A this year and is the odds on favorite to win that division after winning 12 events at the West Regional last week in Lander. Interesting that if Henry was in 3A this year, her time would have only put her fourth in that race.

In the girls 3200 meter races... two winners were freshman, Hohnholt of Saratoga and Brooke Rice of Jackson in 3A. All four girls champions were underclassmen with Henry (3A) a Junior, and Alyssa Miller a Cheyenne Central Sophomore in 4A. For Miller, it is her second title in a row in that event.

In the boys 3200 meter races... All but one are underclassmen. Wind River Senior Zane Bell won the 2A race beating Wyoming Indian Sophomore Caleb HerManyHorses by two seconds. Hayden Hohnholt of Saratoga (1A) is a Junior, Luke Bromley of Lander (3A) is a Junior and Dominick Robinson of (4A) Gillette is a Junior.

Past Champions and how they fared: Cokeville's Dallen Fiscus was third in the 1A 3200 after winning it last year. Hohnholt, this year's 1A winner, was 2nd last year in 2A to Caleb HerManyHorses who finished second in 2A this year. Trevor Ricks of Star Valley won the 3A race last year and after the Braves were moved to 4A this year, Ricks finished second.

Adria Grubb of Saratoga was the 2A champion last year as a sophomore. She finished second to Hohnholt this year in the 1A race.
